Heritage Festival - 2006

The 2006 Heritage Days and Folk Festival will be held on the Museum grounds , November 4th. There will be old time heritage demonstrations: shingle making, open hearth cooking, flint knapping, deerskin trader, blacksmith, and more. While we expect to be there from 10AM till 8PM, some demonstrations may run only earlier in the day.

We will have live entertainment; local gospel and bluegrass bands will be forming throughout the day. There will be children's activities.
Indian fry bread and Tacos will be available along with other foods.
Bring the entire family and something to sit on and enjoy a day filled with fun. Tour the museum and the old buildings.

Log Cabin fireplace cooking with butter making
A spinner on our new spinning wheel
A lady crocheting
Flint nappers
Indian Deerhide man (Nathan Chesser)
Turpine dislay with still made to scale and many other artificats, with Raymon Melvin
Fresh vegetables
Crestivew car oldies with the lady flapper
Black smith shop demonstration in new black smith shop
Shingle making
Walton Guard with ladies demonstrating making quilts from that era
Homemade jellies, jams, pickles with other home made items

Foods to enjoy:
Hot dogs, hamburgers, nachos, drinks, popcorn, cotton candy
Shrimp gumbo

Making shuck dolls
Buggy rides
Bobbing for apples, playing checkers (kids)
Shelling corn
Grinding corn into meal
Museum and Library open
Heritage Vol II booth for help in ordering or writing
Blountstown Heritage Park witll bring a display
Defuniak Springs Historical Assoc is bringing a display
Heritage Museum of North West Florida will have a display

Music all day with different groups, inviduals,etc. This will be near the Big Tent where folks can bring a lawn chair, gather, fellowship listen to singing and enjoy the day.

Of course since our election will be the next Tuesday all candiates are welcome to come and if they like can have time on the mike (short time)

The ladies from Lebanon Missionary Baptist Church
Choir at Baker started the day's activities with some old time favorite gospel hymns.

Betty Willams on piano is the senior member of the Lebanon Baptist Church Choir and a native of Baker.

Mary Richardson of Baker demonstrated quilting and display several of her own handmade quilts.

Ernestine Harvey, 83 years young looks spry in her period garb.
Mary Ellen Wexler a volunteer for the Baker Block Museum shared samples of her freshly churnned butter and the methods that pioneers used to make it.

The Spanish Trail Crusiers Car Club from Crestview brought out many of their classics for the day.


Helene Potthoff of the Walton Guard explains what life
was like for the wives of Civil War soldiers.

Mabel Jean Morrison of Laurel Hill and Okaloosa County Commissionor, Bill Roberts, both strong supportors of the Baker Block Museum share a few comments with Northwest Florida Daily News reporter, Leslie Fike.

Museum volunteer, Anissa Thompson sold rootbeer and lightered from the porch of the Otahite Post Office.

Museum Curator, Jeanette Henderson and North Okaloosa Historical Association Board member Larry Bulger opened the dedication ceremony on the porch of the log cabin.

Danny Hall's family was honored for the generous contribution of the log cabin that has been restored on
the museum grounds.

Bell Madden Faulk shared memories of warming by the fireplace in Will Helms cabin while enroute to Shockley Springs School.

Folks are enjoying horse and buggy rides.

Two little girls admire the crate of chickens beneath the cabin.

The seafood gumbo made and served by Brenda Russell went fast!

Betty Courtney's booth with homemade jams and jellies was a favorite among those attending the festival.

Raymond Melvin, of Holley explains some of the artifacts he has collected from the turpentine industry of this area.
