Baker Block of stores 1909

Baker Block of Stores 1909 The Baker Block Building was constructed between 1908 and 1910 by J.D.C. Newton, an engineer at the Bagdad Lumber Company. The area was still known as Cobb Town at that time, but was soon renamed Baker, in honor of Newton's father-in-law, Rev. R.Q. Baker. Many businesses were housed in the block over the years, but the Baker Mercantile Store operated continuously in one of the buildings from 1910 until it's closing in 1994. The block was purchased and restored by the North Okaloosa Historical Association with grants funded by the Department of State, Bureau of Historical Preservation and opened as the Baker Block Museum in July, 1995.
